Como chegou uma padaria dinamarques no Rio no meio de um pandemia?

It all started when everything was forced to a halt due to the pandemic. Danish Maibrit Thomsen, who was the previous director of the Instituto Cultural da Dinamarca, and Ronni Kot Wenzell, a Danish freelance musician suddenly unable to play concerts, were both – just like everyone – also stranded at home, having to come up with something.

With Maibrit’s years of experience in bringing Danish culture to the brazilian people, she came up with the idea of expanding the brazilian bread culture with some of Denmark’s longstanding bread culture, as a healthy sorce of seeds and fibers. She called Ronni, and shortly after they presented the bread to the first local brazilians.

From that moment, BRØD (meaning “bread” in Danish) took off faster than they could ever have imagined, surpassing all goals that they had set. BRØD became the buzz and already within the first month, Mai and Ronni had to ask for additional help with customer communication, deliveries, purchases, logistics etc. And already 3 months in, BRØD had grown to 4 people working daily to keep up with the demand. All organized and executed from individual, isolated locations due to covid. A bottle of champagne was popped and glasses raised over Zoom for the astounding success!

Not long herafter, Maibrit was presented with an opportunity to move back to Denmark, too good to say no to, and they decided it was best to pass the torch and sell the company to Adrielle Lima Bernardes – Ronni’s girlfriend – who had already been a close partner from the beginning of the the adventure.

And thus, the Danish bread traditions and recipes have been to continue to grow and thrive in Rio de Janeiro. With Adrielle at the steering wheel, Ronni helping out in the background, and their little 4 year old son, Erik as the unstoppable quality inspector!
